The UC Santa Cruz seismology group includes world experts on earthquakes, subduction zones, tsunamis and friction. Our research takes us to exotic locales like the ice streams of Antarctica and ocean-going vessels. However, some of the most exciting work happens right here at home. We use massive databanks of global data and state-of-the-art computing to develop new techniques to forecast catastrophic events and unravel the workings of large earthquakes. We have both rock mechanics and earthquake analog labs where we physically model the fundamental physics of failure. We are always looking for new graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with strong quantitative skills. Seismo slug alum have gone on to faculty appointments at universities, government agencies, research organizations and industrial laboratories.
