My research interests have been related to hydrogeophysical characterization of the near surface, using low frequency electrical methods such as self-potentials. I’ve been studying the electrokinetic response of unsaturated media, using streaming-potentials and seismoelectric measurements, both at the laboratory and in the field. I’m currently working on permeability changes over time in groundwater reservoir using tidal responses.

My research focuses on hydrologic and thermal processes within fault zones and their role in controlling fault slip behavior or in providing insightful signatures within fault rocks and borehole observations. Some of my research also has applications associated with understanding fluxes of heat, solutes, and hydrocarbons through seafloor vents and hydrothermal basins. In general, these efforts involve a combination of hydrogeology, thermal geophysics, and geomechanics and utilize field and laboratory data in combination with modeling to test hypotheses.

Thomas Göebel

Assistant Professor

CERI, University of Memphis

Research Interests: My research focuses on the investigation of fault structures, seismicity distributions and earthquake source processes. I integrate rock mechanics experiments, statistical seismology, and fault structural observations to advance understanding of the complex interaction between tectonic loading and fault heterogeneity as well as respective implications for rupture dynamics. My research aims to improve the documentation of fault structure and stress, based on micro-seismicity analysis at seismogenic depth where other observational methods are not feasible. My investigation of micro-seismicity is also important to monitor fluid-flow and the activation potential of faults due to fluid injection and waste water disposal.

Research Interest: I’m interested in earthquake occurence and interaction. I use physics based earthquake simulators to study fault interactions and long-term earthquake statistics, as well as rupture dynamics. My work primarily involves studying the effects of different frictional properties and fault geometries on the probabilities of large earthquakes using the multi-cycle earthquake simulator RSQSim and a California fault model.
