The UC Santa Cruz seismology group includes world experts on earthquakes, friction and all types of natural failure. We do catastrophes. Our research takes us to exotic locales like the ice streams of Antarctica and ocean-going vessels. Our neighborhood faults also provide world-class exposure on the San Andreas system where we probe the geological manifestations of creep, seismic slip and the role of water in the earthquake cycle. Some of the most exciting work happens right here in the building. Nestled in the redwood forest, we have one of the most extensive experimental earthquake groups anywhere where we use a combination of rock mechanics and analog systems to unravel the full earthquake cycle. We also use massive databanks of global data and state-of-the-art computing to develop new techniques to unravel the workings of large earthquakes. We are always looking for new graduate students and postdoctoral researchers with strong quantitative skills.
